An MRI technologist is primarily responsible for getting accurate scans of different body parts to aid physicians in diagnosing and following up with patients. Your training will include human anatomy and pathology. You will need to know how to identify organs that are healthy as well as those that are diseased. By scanning the right organ and ensuring you have the right views, doctors can continue with other diagnostic tests or start treating patients.

Apart from learning anatomy and pathology, you must know how to operate an MRI machine. This isn’t always easy, as new models are released every once in a while. If your hospital or center acquires a new model, you’ll have to adapt and learn how to use it efficiently. Maintaining machines is also your job but repairing them isn’t.

MRI technicians or technologists don’t sit in a room all day operating MRI machines. You will get plenty of patient interaction. You’ll have to talk to them before the scan, ask them a few questions, and then explain the procedure. Many patients will be scared. After all, sitting in a confined space isn’t something people enjoy. It’s your job as an MRI tech to calm them down. To get the best images, you’ll have to tell them how to position themselves and not to move during the scan.

Some people assume that MRI techs just sit in rooms and operate MRIs. That’s not true. MRI techs are important members of healthcare teams that affect patients’ lives. From their knowledge in anatomy, pathology, physics, and MRI software to know how to communicate with patients effectively, theirs is not an easy job.
